I'd personally go for ebony, yew or something as flexible. While oak is certainly extremely tough, it's not flexible and splinters...
Or a compound bow, made of different materials........
All right, I'll shut up now.

Red oak is reputable for splintering, but white oak, dried and cut correctly, is much more reliable.
