Roe Wolf

RoeWolf

Loyal Servant of Altera
Thought since I've been gone for so long, I'd dust off my old profile page and give it an update.

Name: Roe Bowyer
Nickname/Alias: Roe Wolf, The Birch Bowman
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Height: 181cm or 5'11"
Weight: 11.4st
Hair: Red
Eyes: Steel blue
Skin: Light tan

Identifying Marks: Roe's red hair, beard, and ponytail is probably his most identifiable feature.

Appearance: Most of his face is covered by his thick red hair and beard, showing little more than his eyes. Roe dresses fairly plain, usually in brown pants and a dark green shirt. The bow he carries at all times is his most prized possession. Is made of what appears to be birch, though it has the same strength as hardwood, and it is strung with a black string. It was once a walking stick owned by Roe's late grandfather, a creative inventor whose ideology of progress towards a technologically-advanced tomorrow did not sit well with the Kings and Queens.

Strengths: Skilled with a bow and knows the arts of fletching and bowying like the back of his hand. He has a way with animals, especially wolves. Roe is relatively fast on foot and is able to keep a cool head when darkness falls.

Weaknesses and Fears: Roe will do almost anything to help wolves, as they are the servants of Lycanria. He will go out of his way to feed wild wolves in order to please Lycanria, which can be a problem as Roe will deviate from quests to feed a pack before continuing on. Roe is wary of magic and refuses to use or be healed by magic powers, though he occasionally uses enchanted weapons (only when necessary). His fear of magic is not greater than his will to live. He is an average swordsman, nothing special.

Religion and Cults: Roe's primary deity is Lycanria, as he often relies on moonlight for safe passage at night. Roe believes that Lycanria is weak at the moment, and that the god ultimately wishes to return to his domain on the moon, as well as seek revenge on Kilrox. Roe has dedicated his life to finding a way to restore Lycanria to his lunar throne. He also prefers cold climates to warm ones and he prefers the company of wolves to that of men. Roe trusts in Lycanria and his moon more than any man, torch, map, compass, or landmark. He is quick to defend his name, and in fact this is the only deity whom Roe will lay down his life for.

Additionally, as a worshiper of Lycanria and a believer that Lycanria’s current state is imperfect, Roe has become sympathetic towards werewolves, though he has no wishes to receive the god’s ultimate blessing himself.

Roe believes that violence should have a purpose, and so he favors Korigon and Skeira over Kilrox, but that is as far as he goes for their worship. He often speaks in favor of The Blind Queen of the Afterlife, but only because he wants to be on her good side when he dies.

Harateth is just a little too much "good" for Roe, but he definitely prefers Harateth to the other two main deities. Doesn't dislike Vermella, and agrees with her follower's ideal to 'preach by example,' but does not worship her and knows that she probably hates him (though Roe would argue that his purpose in killing is to save the living).

Roe has a hard time trusting the followers of Jax, though he has no problem with the god himself. Roe sees that specific cult of followers as favoring profit and personal gain over compassion, and so putting his life in their hands is too much of a gamble.

He hates with a passion Skraag whose minions Roe has dedicated his life to slaying, Jishrim for his destruction of man, and most of all Kilrox for senseless violence as well as the crimes he’s committed against Lycanria. On a side note, Roe cannot understand why the Blind Queen allows Skraag to take her dead from her to fight the living, and again hopes that by staying on her good side, he will avoid any complications in the afterlife.

Towards all other gods and goddesses Roe is accepting and positive, but ultimately indifferent.

Profession: 3 jobs, as of present: Fisherman under Roland of Mirage, Baker of Timbervale, and Baker of Riddleport.
Roe is also a skilled bowyer, fletcher, and woodcutter.

Background: Roe was born the son of a noble, but to the daughter of a sheep farmer who lived in a secluded valley just to the East of Valkyria in the old world, beyond the mountains of snow. Roe remembers little of his birthplace, save for one incident that happened to him while he was wandering lost in the snowy mountains.
Roe’s mother was a brilliant storyteller, and Roe had grown up listening to her fantastic tales about gods, men, and war. Like most children, Roe had fearful of the forests for the wolves that lived therein. He even began to fear Lycanria, god of the moon. He feared that if ever he became lost in the mountains, Lycanria would bite him and turn him into a werewolf.
As fate would have it, one night he was with his mother's father, a farmer in their village, scouting the mountainside for wood and coal. It was a terrible winter that year, and the storm that night was so violent Roe could not see his hand in front of his face. The boy lost his footing near the edge of a cliff. Roe awoke to the sight of a large grey wolf looking over him. The two stared silently at each other for what seemed like a lifetime. Roe was frozen in fear. Unable to move his body, he uttered a faint whisper: “Please… wolf. Don’t eat… me…” At that, the wolf took off into the storm.
A few moments after the terror in his chest subsided, Roe noticed that the storm had too died down. He picked himself up, brushed the snow from his clothes, and proceeded to climb back up the steep cliff. Once at the top, the young boy began searching for the farmer. Now, the farmer was always the inventive type, trying to discover even the simplest ways to manipulate the world around him. One of his most prized possessions was an unbreakable birch walking staff which he had ‘enchanted’ with local herbs and tree sap.
All Roe ever found of his mother's father was the birch walking stick. He carried it back to his mother, who began to cry softly. She told him to keep it, as it was very important to him and he would want his heir to have it. Soon thereafter, Roe would come to believe that he had been saved by the wolf, and so as a result, his opinion of wolves and their god began to change. By the time he left home less than a year later, he would have formed a complete and unyielding faith in Lycanria, his moon, and his wolves.
At eight years old, Roe was sent away to his uncle Huff, known by the townsfolk as the town drunk. His uncle was a gruff, strict man who only believed in what he saw with his own eyes. When Roe would try to talk to Huff about Lycanria and other myths of the gods, his uncle would tell him not to talk of such nonsense. If Roe continued, Huff would take the boy outside and tie his leg to a post until the next dawn.
Despite what he saw as his uncle’s ignorance, Roe never stopped believing in and worshiping Lycanria. If anything, it grew from being thankful for Lycanria sparing his life into an obsession with returning the favor. His uncle was often disinterested in the boy, though, and spent most of his days passed out on the floor either at home or at the local Inn. Huff did manage to find enough sober time during daylight hours to train the boy how to hunt with a bow and how to defend himself with a sword.
As he grew in age, Roe wished to learn more about archery, so he befriended the town’s fletcher, who taught him the finer points of fletching and bowying. The fletcher was also the one who encouraged him to follow his heart and seek out Lycanria. As a gift and to wish him luck on his travels, the Fletcher crafted Roe’s birch walking stick into a magnificent bow. Unusual, that a bow could be crafted from birch, but such was the old man’s ingenuity.
At the age of seventeen, Roe set off on his quest to find Lycanria. He never found the god. Instead he spent seven years living alone in the wild, moving from place to place with little to no human contact.
Roe has now decided that he needs more information before he can find Lycanria; that wandering the wilderness endlessly is not enough. He attempted to return home, to Valkyria, only to find it lying in ruin. Roe now seeks a settlement, somewhere lively, where he might learn more about Lycanria, his whereabouts, and the great battle between him and Kilrox.

The poem that Lycanria uttered to the farmer in Valkyria forever echoes in his head:

Littles birdies wander lost...
Not yet knowing of the cost...
Splashy Splashy in the rain...
Unaware of the pain...

He believes that by unraveling this poem, he will discover a way to help Lycanria.
