Clan Goraya
"Honor, Courage, Compassion."

Basic Information

The Goraya Clan is a recently founded family of self-styled "Ka'ar" nomads, who formed a few years ago. Their territory is relatively undefined, but they generally live within the Moorlands west of Blackrush, or east of the Moorlands, past the mountains. Initially, the clan was led by Tabakov Goraya, but he soon retired once his daughter, Tylla Goraya, came of age, and passed away shortly after that. While they could not be considered such, Tylla styled herself as a chieftess over various nomadic pastoralists who live in the region. As of now, however, the Clan is simply attempting to create a powerbase of followers, both nomad and settled.

Clan Goraya specializes in reindeer herding and bronze-smithing, and make these their main sources of material wealth. Tylla desires to expand their grasp on horse-breeding and medicine-making, however.

Clan Philosophy

"Honor, courage, compassion." These are the words of Clan Goraya, set in the hearts of each newborn babe, roared in battle by warriors, and wailed by their grieving parents. To an outsider, the concepts seem a bit ill-defined, especially when the idea of Honor is touted by many other warrior clans. However, there are a few guiding principles that can roughly outline each word.

1. (Honor) Every promise must be fulfilled. To lie or to betray someone- even your worst enemy- after offering assistance is a grievous sin that practically makes one an aberrant freak of nature. If you must die in fulfilling your oath, then that is what must happen. If you cannot keep a promise, it is better not to make one.

2. (Honor) If it isn't your business, or your place to speak, then stay silent. To offer unnecessary advice or command someone else in another ruler's land- even if they are a subordinate- is a great sign of disrespect and lack of faith in their competency. If you must intervene, ask for permission, privately. If a superior tells you to do something, do it, unless it would dishonor you. Always bring up why you are reluctant to do something in private.

3. (Honor) Don't ever overstay your welcome, but always encourage your guests to do so. When one is a guest in another persons' home, it is honorable to do your part in keeping the place orderly and shipshape. Always bring gifts, accept seconds when offered, laugh at their jokes, and refuse compliments. Leave as if you are saying goodbye forever. When you are a host, always consider the guest a close friend. Do not keep secrets that you cannot hide, always smile, and always refuse (and then accept) gifts with the utmost humility.

4. (Courage) Fight your wars however you wish, but fight their leaders with respect and gusto. Do not delay combat out of fear and never use trickery before, during, or after a duel. If you perish, make sure your Druzhina know they are not to slay the witnesses, and vice versa.

5. (Courage) Fight for your friends and allies when asked, and also when you are not asked- but only when it is clear that it is alright. Do not fight the wrong person, and do not aggravate a situation further unless it is acceptable. Always give your allies credit for victories.

6. (Compassion) Mercy is what separates the warrior from the murderer and the torturer. Grieve for the enemy dead, mend their wounded like they were your children, and treat them like honored guests. When an opponent cries out, "Mercy!", let them live, for they may one day become your friend, and if not, then at least their shame will haunt them forever.

7. (Compassion) Do not take your enemies as slaves, and do not massacre them either. If you are to raid them, do not defile their dead, their shrines, or their holymen. Do not leave the defeated to starve, die of thirst, or of disease. To slaughter the unarmed and unready is not a victory, it is cowardice and cruelty.

Other Policies

Clan Goraya is more or less open about interacting with Settled People, so long as they respect their ways and don’t try and impede their herding routes. They do not raid as often as other Clans, and are generally more peaceable. Mages are seen with ambivalence.

Adoption is OPEN

For those outsiders wishing to join the Clan, one must gain the trust of the Chieftain, but they must also understand what it is to be a Ka'ar. This should be done, in roleplay.

The Goraya family as well as their followers remain unplayed, and as such, I am opening a character list. If you are interested, please PM me on the forums and we can discuss it. The characters are fairly open-ended so that whoever takes them up can flesh them out however they want! Open brackets- [] - indicate that the position is empty. You'll want to take a look at this link about the Ka'ar people in general before applying.

All character art here is from Phobs on Deviantart!
Check them out, they're very good!

Great Grandma Butan: The eldest surviving matriarch of the Clan. While around seventy or so, she still is quite strong, and has a laconic tongue to boot. Generally advises the Clan as an Elder and acts as a healer. She keeps the nature of her potions just as much of a secret as she does her famous recipes. []

Non-Familial Positions

Clan Goraya is also looking for competent individuals to fulfill certain roles, these can be of Ka'ar origin or be trusted Settlers. Such roles will be filled in RP.

Head of the Horse-Herders: The Ka'ar are an equestrian people, and Clan Goraya is not an exception. They will require someone who knows how to breed horses for warfare, work, and recreation, and they also need to be able to keep track of large numbers of horses and how to trade them for other materials. This person would be considered a member of the Herdsman class. []

Clan Forgemaster: Steel is scarce in the steppe, and bronze is a fickle alloy to create. Clan Goraya needs a good smith to forge weapons, armor, and tools made of steel and bronze. []

Clan Champion: The head of the Druzhina, the Clan Champion commands all warriors in battle, and also brings pride to Clan Goraya by dueling and defeating other Clan champions before a battle. They also act as a bodyguard. []

High Shaman: The High Shaman is an expert in exploring the realm of the ancestors, communing with Mother Bear (Shalherana) and her avatars, conducting ceremonies, and giving out general spiritual advice. They may double as record-keepers, diplomats, and medicinemen. [Boetius Forehorn- High Medicineman, specifically] TheDuples

Non-Familial Characters:

Like Family members, these can be taken up, just ask me. Provided skins are optional.

Erden: A sweet, but distractible reindeer herder. Fifteen years of age, quite short, toothy smile. Male.
