Fauna
Snowy Owl
A very rare resident of open mountainous moorland above the tree line. They nest on the ground atop a hummock on rocky outcrops, Feasting on rodents such as lemmings which can be found further south living among the snowy tundra to the south.
Red Fox
A common, but shy, resident of the valleys surrounding the mountains. They live in extensive multi-roomed lairs dug in the earth. They tend to keep in the forests or scrub but may venture onto the tundra. They hunt small rodents, like voles, but will also eat insects, berries, birds, eggs and many other things if hungry.
Arctic Fox
The arctic fox is an incredibly hardy animal that can survive frigid Arctic temperatures as low as –58°F in the treeless lands where it makes its home. Arctic foxes live in burrows, and in a blizzard they may tunnel into the snow to create shelter. It has furry soles, short ears, and a short muzzle.
Mountain Hare
A common resident found around upper limit of vegetation. They are mainly nocturnal and during the day remain in a form, a shallow burrow which is usually open and hidden under scrub or rock. In bad winter weather they burrow in snow. They eat grasses, herbs and shoots in summer, while in winter they browse heather, berries and various scrub.
