(Hamlet) {Moderate} Braes

Axex

Lord of House Hawklight
The Hamlet of Braes

[Moderate]

Braes is a small fishing hamlet nestled underneath an imposing Military Watchtower on the island of Osberht, within the bounds of the Kingdom of Hierax.

[General Information]

The region is exceptionally poor, and farming and fishing is done almost exclusively for subsistence. Occasional trade occurs when Hieraxian warships or merchant ships from Queensport or Blackstone pass by the hamlet and stop to take on fresh water, which is rare within the island chain. While the island is ruled by the Hawklight family in name, it is far removed from the Capital of the Kingdom, and has no real connection with politics, or people, aside from its location below a military outpost. This region is primarily to add some flavour and interest to the islands to the east of Blackstone, and as such it's not somewhere anyone can settle in. All construction will be done by me, and at the moment, the village is essentially done. It's a place to have as backstory if you'd like a poor islander character with some sailing and fishing experience. The community is tiny, and as such acts such as murder of thievery will be punished harshly, and since anyone visiting is an outsider, they will be blamed, and for the most part, the government in Blackstone will turn a blind eye.

[Culture and Structures]

The Hamlet is populated by the intermingled descendants of Talon Islanders, and shipwrecked Norvägen refugees who fled after the fall of the Bastion stones, and as such its culture, while primarily Islander, draws some aspects from its ancestors, and this influence can be seen throughout the hamlet, particularly in the small fishing boats and sod houses. The families of the village are primarily of the Clan MacRanald, and are descended from the elderly captain of the Norvägen ship and his native Islander wife. Residents are wary of outsiders, and have an insular culture. A person from Blackstone, while being part of the same kingdom is seen almost as an entirely different race. Houses are primarily constructed from a mix of local timber and stone, and are covered in earth for insulation against the biting cold. Water is drawn from a pair of wells cut into the earth.
