The Blood Moon
A historical recount by Headmaster Kublai Kull of Frostwarts

Frostwarts - To Collect, Create & Educate

The Blood Moon has returned to Altera and has been in the sky for already 3 consecutive days until now; Sunderday, 8th of Mistset, 2306. Yet, this is not the first time the Blood Moon has been observed. This document will describe all the information Frostwarts holds within its historical records that mention the Blood Moon in any way, hopefully to shed light on its possible current meaning.

Chapters:

  • Scardrac the Demon
  • Vermella
  • Sallana
  • Queen Grief
  • Heart Prophecy
  • Theodra
  • Current References

Scardrac the Demon
The first account of a blood moon being mentioned is found in ancient scriptures mentioning an individual named “Scardrac” who, as it is written, was a Demon of ancient times who went on a slaughtering rampage during full moon nights, dubbing those nights “Blood Moons”.

Vermella
The next reference of a Blood Moon can be found in journals referring to Blood Moon Festivals. These were religious events held by those who worshipped the –now dead- Goddess Vermella. These festivals were held as a summoning rite and often involved sacrifices in some shape or form. There are records of a fourth and fifth Blood Moon Festival, so we may assume at least five of such festivals were held. The fourth is said to be held at the Crossroads Cathedral under religious leader Salheira Rain-River, a Caparii woman presumably.

Phrases such as the following have been found in old literature:
“The time has come for us to enter the light. On the fourth blood moon, we dance in honor of our queen. All will know the truth of Vermella, the faithful and the doubtful will gather, And the Path of Red will be shown.”

“The blood moon is soon to rise. A final call to the Caparii Queen, and a final sacrifice,a parting gift, of song and dance and feasting. “

Later, more of such events, though less festive, were held in the name of Vermella. It was the priest Linden Silveira Duskgrove who hosted three events. One of which was a Blood Moon sacrifice, another was a prayer during a Blood Moon. And another was a prayer after Storm’s Landing’s destruction. Some of these events took place in the Bloodrose Glen.

This Phrase was often used:
“Let the Blood Moon guide you true.”

A very vague reference to the Blood Moon was made by a series of rumors found in several discarded journals:
There was some kind of incident in Al’Bathor on the night of the Blood Harvest Moon. Details of this event were vague and widely contradictory.

  1. One Journal mentions a group of ten caparii, all in red clothing, were seen bowing before a taller caparii woman, speaking in Fae. The Caparii woman then left towards the river.
  2. Another mentions a Halfling, moor elf, and two caparii were performing some kind of demonic rite near the mines of Al’Bathor. It was unclear if this is a cult or not.
  3. A third journal mentions a party of armored men stormed into the mines, killing a caparii woman. A group of caparii in red attempted to summon a God. Some say it was She Beyond Names, the old Goddess of the Arcane. Some say it was Sallana, some say it was Jishrim, but in the end nothing happened.

Sallana
The Lenngseah Óancoll, the Caparii forest wanderers, have ties with the blood moon, celebrating them in their holidays and ascribing its colors to Sallana and Vermella.

Queen Grief
Gromm describes the blood moon tied to Queen Grief’s Nether events in his great work 'a history of Altera'

PC 2230 | Nether Portals became opening in masses, the Second Great War escalated as Queen Grief became invasion attempts.
The Second Great War escalated once more as Queen Grief began opening Nether Portals all across Altera- in the countryside and deep within cities- to invade Altera fully with the Armies of Naught and corruption. Alterans were very victorious most of the time.
These invasions only happened when there was a Blood Moon to begin with. However, after 2234, Nether Portals began to spring up more violently, randomly, across Altera.

Heart Prophecy:
The famous Heart Prophecy was apparently given during a blood moon, it reads:

Between two pillars stand
A fertile ground and breathing land
Passion red
Love unsaid
Each will destroy the
Other, if they can.
She is of the Moon
Of the seeping Red
Known for Passion,
And not yet dead...
She is the Mother
Fruit to be borne
A master of charm.
Of wit, of scorn
On this Fated Day
Sown was the seed
For when They clash
Only One will leave.

Theodra
The bloodmoon also had links to Theodra. Posters have been found in the records of a wolf howling during a blood moon. The posters have this written underneath:

Greetings one and all who can pull a bow or strike true. Lord Eimar, and Lady Rebecca Chisholm and their family will once again like to invite those to their humble town of Praelidum. In three weeks hence under the full moon we shall partake in an honoring of the Goddess of the hunt Theodra.

Current Blood Moon references:

Most recently: Uriel Valhart warns on a poster hung in Storm’s Landing:
There have been reports of erratic behavior and of the moon-gazers losing hours at a time, staring at the sky above.

Kethron warns in a private letter to Headmaster Kublai before he hosts a lesson on the Blood Moon:
The moon seems to be emitting a form of magic that is unhealthy to the psyche of the individual who gazes upon it.

This is all that could be found in Frostwarts' archives.
Hopefully these past events can shed light on what is about to happen.

[This document can be found in Frostwarts Library (for real) and those who travel there to do research on the current events may use the information in this book to draw their own conclusions. It is entirely derived off of forum posts that were public knowledge or posters that were once hung up, making it reasonable that fragments of the events mentioned on the forums would make their way to bits of well-kept journals.]
